What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a protective restoration that is also referred to as a “cap.” This customized solution is designed to safeguard vulnerable teeth from further damage or infection in the future. Our crowns at Treehouse Pediatric Dentistry are made of porcelain to provide your child’s smile with a more natural-looking appearance and cover the entire surface of affected teeth.
Shaded to match their tooth enamel, these crowns can blend in with the rest of their smile, so they do not have to endure a metal spotlight for others to see.
The Dental Crown Process

After determining that your child needs a dental crown to protect their vulnerable tooth, one of our pediatric dentists will administer local anesthesia to numb the area before cleaning out the damaged portions. If necessary, your child can also receive dental sedation to help them remain calm during treatment.
Once the tooth is ready, our team will capture impressions of your child’s smile. This mold will be sent to a local laboratory for fabrication. There, lab technicians will use the mold to build your child’s finalized crown using the specifications provided beforehand.
In the meantime, we’ll prepare a temporary crown for your child to wear until their permanent one is ready. Once the crown is returned to our dental office, we will have you bring your child in to have the temporary one removed and the finalized one put into place.
We’ll make sure it fits securely and looks aesthetically pleasing before leaving our office.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

While no one wants their child to receive a dental crown, this restorative treatment is one of the safest, most reliable ways to improve their oral health after suffering from decay or damage. By receiving this type of care, you can expect there to be great benefits, including:
- A restoration that delivers premier protection for more than a decade (or until the primary tooth falls out).
- Optimal durability that allows for normal wear and tear while eating.
- Enhanced aesthetics because of the porcelain that is used to create the crown.
- Better oral health by removing the affected portions of the tooth and preventing the further spread of decay.
